The Karviná Region is Experiencing a Cultural Boom. This Year, People Can Look Forward to Several Festivals and Sporting Events

The Karviná region is transforming into a lively and attractive destination full of new experiences and activities. These events not only bring joy and entertainment, but they are also part of the broader plan of the POHO 2030 transformation program to support the restoration and development of the post-mining landscape. Additionally, they represent the first step towards opening the symbolic cultural gateway of POHO Park Gabriela. As a result, they contribute to its transformation into an attractive destination for both tourists and local residents,” said Šárka Šimoňáková, Deputy Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region for Regional Development.

  • POHO Day 2024 will take place on June 22, 2024, in Darkov Spa Park. The program starts at 3:00 PM and will offer activities for children, dance performances, and a concert by the band All Ska Pones. The highlight of the festival will be a stand-up show by Ostrava’s BUM BUM Comedy. Visitors can also look forward to spa treatments, carriage rides, archery, and other attractions. The day will conclude with a relaxing dance party.
  • The POHO 50 running race, also known as the Revírní Pohodová Padesátka, will also be held on June 22 in Karviná and includes races of 50 km, 21 km, relays, and children’s races. This running race takes place in the beautiful nature around Karviná Sea and is intended for both professional runners and amateurs. In addition to the running races, there will be a rich accompanying program including performances and competitions.
  • Summer at Barbora will offer a series of events at the former Barbora Mine throughout the summer. Visitors can look forward to a diverse sports and cultural program, including a five-day theater festival “Scene Without Borders” (Czech-Polish scene) concluding with a production of the novel “The Leaning Church.” Also featured are the COAL festival of electronic and dance music, Sports Day, a Latin dance hall, and much more.
  • Train Rides Through the Mining Sidings. Guided tours on the Mining Express Train between mines. The event will run from June 15 to September 22, 2024. On Saturdays, the train departs at 12:35 PM from Ostrava Střed station, and on Sundays, it departs at 12:35 PM from Havířov station.

I would like to invite not only the citizens of Karviná to these events, for whom it is another addition to the already rich cultural and sports program, but also people from all over the Czech Republic to discover the beauty of our city and the post-mining landscape. Karviná has a lot to offer. We have beautiful parks, the famous leaning church, a historic square with a castle, and, among other things, our own sea,” said Deputy Mayor Andrzej Bizoń.

The state enterprise DIAMO values its cooperation with the Moravian-Silesian Region in mitigating the consequences of mining activities. We are pleased that the areas of former black coal mines reclaimed by us, not only in the Karviná region, are finding new meaningful uses. And long-inaccessible areas are once again opening up to the public. We are ready to continue cooperating with local municipalities in other areas affected by mining,” added Ludvík Kašpar, Director of the state enterprise DIAMO.
