Industrial Railways in the Post-Mining Landscape
As part of the revitalization of the area, plans are in place to utilize or restore some railway sidings for public passenger transport.
During the summer season of 2021, with the support of the Moravian-Silesian Region, the operation of excursion trains on industrial railways to the center of the post-mining landscape was launched. The evaluation of the 2021 operation showed unexpected and surprising public interest in this type of leisure activity.
At the same time, there is a generally perceived increase in demand from Polish tourists to visit Ostrava, especially the Ostrava ZOO located near the industrial railway. Similarly, as in the Ostrava-Karviná agglomeration, there is an effort in the Polish region of Katowice to utilize, enhance, and showcase the mining history of the region by using the industrial railways. This also aims to create a leisure synergy for both agglomerations. By connecting these two independent industrial transport networks, an interesting and attractive transport system could emerge, utilizing secondary transport “brownfields” created after the decline of mining.
POHO trains have been operating since 2020 on weekends. Besides the mining circuit, they have successfully connected the city of Český Těšín with the Ostrava ZOO and the Ostrava-Střed station.
