A Place Where History Meets a Modern Vision. POHO 2030 Unlocks Development Opportunities for the Post-Mining Landscape in Karviná.

The post-mining landscape of Karviná is rich not only in industrial but also in cultural heritage. When you visit, you will feel at every step its unique character, shaped by the history of coal mining. This area, known for its unique combination of history, natural wealth, and diverse activities, represents one of the unforgettable places in the Moravian-Silesian Region.

History of Karviná

The history of the post-mining landscape in Karviná is closely tied to industrial development. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it became a center of coal mining and industrial growth. The post-mining landscape was thus marked by significant human effort, bringing about major changes in the local environment. Ancient homesteads, monuments, and industrial buildings now form a colorful mosaic of history, reminding us of the era of mining and the industrial revolution.

The Post-Mining Landscape Today

Today, the post-mining landscape is an area bounded by an imaginary triangle between Karviná, Havířov, and Orlová, covering approximately 60 square kilometers. Visitors can experience the contrast between industrial heritage and beautiful nature, which is gradually returning to balance. Walking trails lead you past abandoned mines and monuments, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of bygone times. Significant historical landmarks in the area include the site of the former Barbora Mine and the Church of St. Peter of Alcantara, known locally as the Leaning Church.

POHO 2030 as a Future Vision for the Post-Mining Landscape

The POHO 2030 transformation program, coordinated by the regional development agency MSID, offers a clear strategy and direction for transforming an area facing economic and social challenges. Its goal is to combine elements of industrial heritage with modern sustainability and ecological development, transforming this area into a place of new opportunities. POHO 2030 aims to stimulate economic activities in the area, creating new jobs and increasing the overall purchasing power of the population.

The potential of the area itself is enormous. Karviná has a unique and robust infrastructure that provides an invaluable foundation for further key connections with surrounding cities. The development of cycling routes, walking trails, and regional strategic projects promises a new era of innovation, sustainability, and prosperity for the entire region.

Additionally, part of the strategic projects will be supported by the Just Transition Operational Program (OPST), an ambitious initiative of the European Union that reflects the key challenges faced by mining regions. A wide range of applicants, including municipalities, regions, associations, organizations, small, medium, and large enterprises, as well as universities, research institutions, and many other entities, can apply for support to receive grants for project preparation and projects related to four areas of support.

Strategic projects in the Moravian-Silesian Region will also be supported by OPST, in line with the transformation plans for post-mining land restoration. These include a project called CEPIS (Center for Entrepreneurship, Professional and International Studies), which will create a unique space and environment to support education, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, there is the POHO Park Gabriela project, which aims to transform the former mining site into a new cultural and leisure center. Another project currently under consideration is focused on the area of the former Lazy coal mine in Orlová, where a new industrial park is expected to be established.
