POHO park Gabriela
The POHO Park project aims to create a dignified centre of the post mining landscape, which will offer facilities not only for visitors of the Gabriela Mine but also of the neighbouring Church of St. Peter of Alcantara. POHO park Gabriela is a strategic project of the Moravian-Silesian Region.
The project aims to transform the former Gabriela Mine area into POHO PARK GABRIELA, a new center of the post mining landscape. Spanning 22 hectares, the area will extend from the Church of St. Peter of Alcantara to the former Gabriela Mine. Existing buildings will be revitalized, and a new Tourist Information Centre (TIC) will be constructed to offer year-round amenities for visitors.
The TIC will be designed according to circular economy principles, using mostly natural materials. Its roof will feature a photovoltaic power plant connected to a battery storage system, enabling the building to produce more energy than it consumes. The site’s unique history and the original mining town of Karviná will be showcased through an audiovisual exhibition in the basement of the former engine house. A variety of cultural programs, including outdoor and indoor activities, will be thoughtfully integrated into the context of the former mine.
The project aligns with established strategies, such as the Development Strategy of the Moravian-Silesian Region and the Concept for the Development of the Post-mining Territory of Karviná until 2030. It will receive 85% of funding from the Fair Transition Fund, with the remaining 15% covered by the Moravian-Silesian Region. The POHO Park association will manage the site’s operations.
